Michigan State is just inside the top 25 heading into next season, according to college basketball national analyst Andy Katz.
The Spartans came in at No. 24 in Katz’s updated power rankings released on Monday. The power rankings from Katz broke down the top 37 teams, with the Spartans being one of many from the Big Ten included.
Here’s how Katz ranked the Big Ten teams:
1. Purdue
8. Michigan
12. Oregon
16. UCLA
19. Illinois
21. Wisconsin
24. Michigan State
27. USC
28. Maryland
30. Indiana
31. Ohio State
From my point of view, this ranking seems a tad low for the Spartans, who have mostly been found in the top 20 of the way-too-early rankings for next year. Michigan State has been widely considered as one of the top four or five teams in the Big Ten heading into next year, but I also have considered there to be a notable gap between Purdue and everyone else. After the Boilermakers, you could make a case for however you wanted to rank the group of Michigan State, Michigan, UCLA, Oregon, Illinois and Wisconsin. So in this instance, Katz simply has the Spartans at the bottom of that second tier.
