The Detroit Lions have experienced numerous changes in both their coaching staff and player roster since January.
Even with all the adjustments, the Lions still possess a strong, competitive team ready to perform in 2025. Tanner Engstrand, who served as passing game coordinator last season, has departed to become the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets under Aaron Glenn.
David Shaw has stepped into Engstrand’s former position and is focused on keeping the offense moving forward. During Detroit’s voluntary offseason workouts, quarterback Jared Goff is already catching Shaw’s attention.
Shaw shared, “You can see the drive in Jared (Goff), and it’s awesome…you can sense it…he’s working to meet his own expectations and elevate everyone around him.”
Goff is clearly motivated to rebound in 2025 after a rough showing in the divisional round against the Washington Commanders. In that game, he completed 23 of 40 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown, but threw three interceptions, one returned for a score, and also fumbled once.
That performance left him dissatisfied. It’s also worth noting that Ben Johnson has moved on, and there are doubts about Goff’s effectiveness without him calling plays. All of this seems to have Goff locked in and showing it early.
Shaw, previously Stanford’s head coach from 2011 to 2022, served as the Denver Broncos’ senior personnel executive in 2024. Though he hasn’t spent much time with Goff yet, he already senses something special. That vibe might be spreading throughout the building—and that’s promising.
Over four years with the Lions, Goff has completed 67.9% of his passes for 16,887 yards, 115 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions. Those are impressive numbers, but this year carries even more weight. He appears to know it—and he’s clearly preparing to rise to the occasion.
