Montana State Bobcats Land Commitment from BYU Transfer Running Back Cale Breslin
Cale Breslin, a senior running back who originally signed with BYU, announced Wednesday on social media that he’s transferring to Montana State.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 195 pounds, the Las Vegas native is a three-star prospect and ranks No. 12 among Nevada’s 2025 recruits, per 247 Sports. He chose the FCS Bobcats after a successful stint at Faith Lutheran High School.
“I’m thrilled to join a program that prioritizes the run game,” Breslin told 406 MT Sports on Thursday. “I feel blessed to have this opportunity.”
Breslin had committed to BYU last May over offers from FCS Campbell and seven FBS schools: Florida Atlantic, Hawaii, Indiana, San Diego State, Syracuse, UConn, and Wisconsin. He signed with BYU in December but missed spring camp due to injury. Afterward, BYU informed him there was no spot for him in the fall, prompting his portal entry a month ago.
MSU running backs coach Josh Firm visited Breslin at home, which played a key role in his commitment decision.
“Coach Firm came to our house, and we instantly liked him,” Breslin said. “He seems like a top-notch coach—very detailed in his approach.”
Although now fully healthy, Breslin said coaches wanted proof of recovery, so he posted a video demonstrating football moves. MSU’s staff was satisfied and extended an offer plus an official visit invite.
“I want to go where I’m wanted,” said Breslin. “I really like their style, the run-heavy system, and how they treat running backs. FCS vs. FBS doesn’t matter to me.”
At Faith Lutheran, Breslin ran for 2,810 yards and 32 touchdowns while adding 33 catches for 364 yards and three scores. He described himself as a versatile offensive weapon.
“I can run inside, bounce outside, break long runs, and catch passes,” he said. “I’m confident I can handle any role they give me.”
Montana State’s current running back room includes Malachi Claunch (Billings West), Colson Coon, Julius Davis (a Wisconsin transfer), Adam Jones (Missoula Sentinel), Shanko Kornachuk, and Jared White. MSU dismissed freshman Unterrio Latin-Henley last month following an assault arrest.
Breslin is the fifth known transfer addition for MSU’s 2025 class. The other newcomers are QB Justin Lamson, and DBs Bryant Meredith, Ife Ohalete, and Bryson Parker.
Dylan Rollins, another Missoula Sentinel alum, made a similar move last year—transferring from BYU to MSU.
