Amid the buzz surrounding draft selections and free-agent signings, DJ Reader’s health might be one of the most crucial factors of the Detroit Lions’ offseason — and the experienced nose tackle heads into training camp with something to prove after hearing murmurs regarding his contract.
“There’s been a bit of disrespect aimed at DJ Reader this offseason as if he’s just a cap casualty. … Seriously? They brought in DJ Reader for a purpose. He’s a difference-making nose tackle,” MLive’s Ben Raven said on the latest Dungeon of Doom podcast.
This marks the first time in several years that Reader is taking part in an offseason program at full health, prepared to show the Lions exactly what they invested in.
“The biggest takeaway I had from talking with DJ Reader is he said this is the healthiest he’s felt in a long time. And he’s just eager to jump in and start rolling,” co-host Kory Woods shared.
The timing is ideal for Detroit’s defensive line, which is facing uncertainty with Aidan Hutchinson recovering from injury and Alim McNeill working his way back too. Reader’s role becomes even more vital.
The podcast hosts emphasized that Reader’s influence can’t be measured just by stats. While casual fans might focus on sacks and tackles, his real strength lies in commanding blockers, holding the line, and elevating those around him.
Even with some speculation surrounding his contract, Reader made it clear that chasing a title is his only focus.
“He’s not worried about anything else. He said whether or not the extension happened didn’t matter. Right now, it’s all about achieving that goal of winning a Super Bowl,” Woods said.
