On3 CFB commentator outlines why Texas Tech could reach the 2025 College Football Playoff

On3 CFB analyst argues Texas Tech deserves a 2025 College Football Playoff spot

Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football program are entering the 2025 college football season with one of the most loaded teams in both the state of Texas and the Big 12 conference. The Red Raiders secured an impressive group of players via the transfer portal and their recruiting efforts have been exciting to watch throughout the offseason.

With the new college football season rapidly approaching, it’s a good time to consider just how far Texas Tech might advance this year.

According to Andy Staples, McGuire and his Texas Tech squad could be poised for a memorable 2025 season. There’s a lot to be optimistic about in the ever-unpredictable Big 12, and Staples appears to be projecting the Red Raiders to capture the Big 12 title and punch their ticket to the 2025 College Football Playoff.

Andy Staples views Joey McGuire and Texas Tech as legitimate contenders for a 2025 College Football Playoff berth

Here’s where Staples predicts Texas Tech will be seeded in this year’s College Football Playoff 12-team format:

A 10th seed isn’t exactly a bad outcome. It could certainly be better, but it’s respectable. Staples notes this placement is primarily due to the Red Raiders’ impressive roster depth.

“The Big 12 is notoriously tough to call, so I’m going with the team that spent this offseason bolstering its roster with top-tier talent,” Staples writes. “Texas Tech upgraded across the board, and if the secondary has improved considerably, the Red Raiders could be a real force.”

That certainly seems to be a reasonable view of the situation in Lubbock as the new season approaches. Even with the loss of a couple of coordinators, Texas Tech appears to have a roster capable of competing at the top of the Big 12.

And how would the Red Raiders fare against Georgia in Staples’ projected College Football Playoff bracket? Well… not too well. Staples seems to think the Bulldogs will overpower Texas Tech and prevent the Big 12’s only representative from advancing past the opening round.
