Jared Goff hints at fresh additions to the Lions’ offensive playbook

As the Detroit Lions gear up for a tough slate of games this season, they’re aiming to build on last year’s success despite a frustrating playoff exit. Though discussion continues around quarterback Jared Goff, he remains at the helm of the offense, teasing that fans might see a slightly updated look in 2025.

One of the main changes in Detroit is at offensive coordinator, as Ben Johnson departed to become the Chicago Bears’ head coach, with John Morton stepping in. Still, Goff told reporters the offense won’t regress, though there will be some new “wrinkles” added to their scheme, according to NBC Sports.

“Of course not, we want to improve. We’re trying to correct what we didn’t do right last season and grow from that,” Goff said. “I think that would’ve happened even with the same staff. You always tweak things, but John brings his own spin to the offense and is doing well.”

“There’s some continuity and some new elements. The main focus is syncing up on preferences, and we’re getting there. There are fresh ideas, new terminology, and different methods, so we’re learning each other’s style. It’s a good challenge,” Goff added.

With Morton directing the offense under Goff’s leadership, the conversation around the quarterback’s place among the NFL’s elite continues. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked him ninth under “Solid starters who have flashed high-end play.”

“Goff has led one of the league’s most efficient offenses the past two years, earning an 84.8 passing grade, seventh overall,” PFF noted. “We’ll see how much of that was due to Ben Johnson, now with the Bears, but Goff’s track record proves he’s been a top-10 QB.”

In 2024, Goff passed for 4,629 yards (second in the league), 37 touchdowns (fourth), and 12 interceptions, rounding out another strong year. Morton has familiarity, having been with Detroit in 2022 before joining the Los Angeles Rams.

“It’s important because the quarterback is the centerpiece,” Morton said via NFL.com. “I got to know him a bit when I was in the QB room here. I have a sense of what he prefers. That helps with calling plays. We’ll continue learning as we go and build on what works.”

With key targets like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and others, Goff is poised for another good season when the Lions open against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Sept. 7.
