The Detroit Lions’ offense thrived once again in 2024, thanks in large part to the performance of quarterback Jared Goff.
Goff led a top-10 offense for another season, throwing for 4,629 yards and a personal-best 37 touchdowns, earning another Pro Bowl nod. The team won 15 games and captured the division title once again.
Despite all the positives, Goff struggled in the postseason matchup with the Washington Commanders, clouding his otherwise stellar year. With offensive coordinator Ben Johnson now gone, the pressure builds on Goff to rebound.
Looking ahead to 2025, Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon listed challenges facing each NFL starting quarterback. For Goff, it all circles back to his poor showing in the playoff defeat last season.
“59.7. That was the passer rating Goff posted in a brutal home playoff loss to Washington. Whatever success he finds in the regular season, he must prove it in the postseason.”
Goff has shined during the regular season, but last year’s defeat dropped his playoff record to 4-5. Though he’s played in two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl, his losing playoff mark could pose a problem for a team aiming for more. Goff is well aware of that fact.
Anyone questioning whether Goff grasps the urgency in 2025 should consider the remarks of quarterback coach Mark Brunell. According to Brunell, Goff is locked in and striving to reach greatness.
“Jared (Goff) has achieved nearly everything besides winning a Super Bowl. He’s a Pro Bowler and one of the game’s top quarterbacks, but now he’s driven by the goal of a title. He knows success in February starts with work in May.”
“He understands his role as the team’s leader and staying connected with teammates he’s worked with for years. As the franchise quarterback, he knows this opportunity might not last forever. This year is what matters, and he’s fully committed to making it count.”
After the sting of last postseason, there’s no doubt Goff is motivated to push Detroit further. If he gets in sync with new coordinator John Morton, the Lions may see a determined and resurgent Goff, inspired by January’s letdown.
