Snopes was contacted by several readers asking about the rumor after seeing the popular Facebook post, which said: “Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff stunned the world by rejecting a massive $270 million proposal from billionaire Elon Musk at a prominent charity event. Goff’s bold reply—‘Keep it and spend it on something that actually helps people!’—left the crowd in shock and sparked heated reactions online. What made Goff turn down such a huge offer, and how will this fearless move affect his legacy?”
Although the post attracted over 10,000 reactions, 1,400 comments, and 1,100 shares, the story is completely untrue, and Snopes has rated it false.
The Facebook post linked to a blog on tintinhthanh.online, a website previously identified by Snopes for publishing fake sports news. That article contained entirely made-up details about the encounter, including fictional quotes from unnamed sources claiming Goff doubted the offer’s “unclear social impact.”
One made-up part was an alleged response from Musk on X (formerly Twitter), where he supposedly said: “Didn’t expect that, but I respect Jared’s honesty. The money will go to other charitable efforts.” Snopes found no such statement on Musk’s official X account.
Even after thorough searches using platforms like Google and Bing, no reliable news sources had any record of this alleged event. Several signs of fabrication were evident: no specific event date or location, made-up quotes from celebrities, and an exaggerated dollar figure similar to the $270 million Musk gave to political causes in 2024.
Verified recent news about Goff has focused on his training for the 2025 NFL season under new offensive coordinator John Morton. None of those credible reports mentioned any meeting or offer involving Elon Musk.
