Former Lions long snapper removed from church after confronting priest over allegations
Jake McQuaide, a former long snapper for the Detroit Lions and current NFL free agent, was involved in a tense situation at his Ohio church, where police escorted him out following a confrontation.
According to reports, McQuaide was not arrested or charged. However, officers removed him after he confronted church officials at Our Lady of the Visitation in Green Township, Ohio, regarding allegations that a priest had viewed pornography on a church computer.
The incident began after Jason Williams, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, read a letter from Archbishop Robert Casey addressing the allegations Jason Williams, In the letter, Casey stated the priest would be going on a planned sabbatical and that an investigation found “no substantiated misconduct, either criminally or within the Church.”
WCPO-TV reported that video footage showed McQuaide rising from his seat to ask, “We want to put these rumors to rest. Can you answer this for me … fact or fiction?”
Church leaders told him it was not the right time or setting for the discussion, but McQuaide replied, “I’m sorry, sir, this is the time and the place. I will stand up … Did the priest use our parish computer to look at pornography? True or false?”
Police had already been assigned to the church for the weekend’s services as a precaution against any disturbances, which had already raised tensions.
McQuaide, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice, appeared in nine games for Detroit during the 2023 season. Before that, he spent a decade with the Los Angeles Rams and also had time with the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Miami Dolphins. Last season, he played seven games combined for Minnesota and Miami.
Originally from Cincinnati, McQuaide graduated from Elder High School and played college football at Ohio State before entering the NFL.
