Detroit Lions standout wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has had a fairly low-key offseason. The dynamic pass-catcher and go-to option for quarterback Jared Goff had a phenomenal 2024 season, but ultimately couldn’t help lead the Lions to the place many expected: the Super Bowl.
That objective still lies directly ahead for Detroit, as the franchise opted to retain most of its core contributors on both offense and defense in pursuit of a title. It’s clearly a priority for St. Brown, who recently voiced what every Lions supporter hopes to hear during an appearance with team media.
That attitude is exactly what every Lions player needs heading into OTAs and training camp. Last season’s disappointment stemmed from several uncontrollable factors, including a defense ravaged by injuries. This year, staying healthy across 17 games—particularly on defense—will be key to making a strong postseason push.
The Lions, realistically, must reach the Super Bowl either this year or next. That’s because many of their top young players—like Jameson Williams, Aidan Hutchinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch—will hit free agency in 2027. It’s tough to picture Detroit being able to afford all of them.
That’s why capturing a championship soon is so vital. The Lions are maximizing value right now from key contributors on affordable rookie contracts. This gives them flexibility to make roster moves this year and next while still letting their emerging stars thrive on low-cost deals.
Though a few injuries from OTAs have raised mild concern—Malcolm Rodriguez and Alim McNeill are both expected to miss early parts of the season, and Alex Anzalone remains absent after a forearm injury—there’s nothing too alarming at this point.
With Aidan Hutchinson fully healthy again, it’s hard not to see this Lions team contending for a Super Bowl this year—assuming they can avoid major injuries.
