Just 83 days until the season opener: What does success look like for WR Weston Covey (No. 83) in 2025?
The BYU Cougars are set to kick off the 2025 season in 83 days versus Portland State. As the countdown continues, today we’ll highlight the player wearing No. 83 – redshirt freshman wideout Weston Covey. Weston Covey’s history: The Covey name rings a bell for BYU fans. Weston’s dad, Sean, was a BYU quarterback in the 1980s. Weston stayed local, playing high school ball at powerhouse Lone Peak near Provo. In his 2021 senior season, he notched 43 catches for 743 yards and 13 touchdowns. Despite his standout high school career, Covey didn’t generate much recruiting buzz. He lacks a 247 Sports profile and apparently joined BYU as a walk-on. He completed a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2021-2023 and joined the team in 2024 for his redshirt freshman year.
Covey’s potential impact in 2025: Although Covey has overcome mission rust and spent a season under Aaron Roderick, the odds remain against him breaking through this year. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound receiver is part of a talented wide receiver corps featuring veterans and top underclassmen. Weston Covey’s name doesn’t appear on Ourlads’ current depth chart among the eight listed wideouts. That’s not a criticism of Covey; it’s just the reality for an under-the-radar walk-on competing for playing time at a deep position on a Power Four roster. Wide receivers coach Fesi Sitake is a skilled scout who signed Covey for a reason, and Covey’s returning for a second season for a reason. Success for Covey likely means refining his skills, getting scout team reps, working on his physique, and gaining experience. With four years remaining at BYU, the focus is on long-term growth, and even if he doesn’t play in 2025, he’ll be better prepared in the future.
