Lo Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is a devoted father to four daughters — though that hasn’t stopped him from imagining what it might be like to raise a son.
“I figured having a boy might come with added pressure,” Matthew explained. “I’ve been dealing with expectations since I was around 15, maybe earlier. I’m really grateful I didn’t have to deal with that kind of pressure from the time I was six to fifteen.”
Matthew and Kelly, 36, tied the knot in April 2015. They share four daughters: twins Sawyer and Chandler, 8, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4.
“I had the chance to just be a regular kid who loved playing sports and throwing a ball without thinking about following in my dad’s footsteps or trying to live up to some image,” Matthew said. “That didn’t hit me until I was old enough to process it for myself.”
He continued, “If we had a boy, there’d be a chance that by age eight, people at the park might already expect him to throw better just because of me. When I was that age, I was carefree and didn’t feel watched or compared to anyone.”
Matthew also reflected on the joy he finds in time spent with his daughters, especially during the NFL offseason when family time becomes more frequent.
“There are so many sweet memories I get to make with them,” he said. “Parenting, for me, is when I’m least concerned about the outside world. I give them my full attention. I couldn’t care less what trips other families take or how they parent.”
He added, “My time with them feels like magic.”
Though he tries to stay focused on the present, Matthew admitted that watching his girls grow up “terrifies” him — especially when Kelly sends emotional videos of dads walking their daughters down the aisle.
“I get super emotional. It’s brutal,” Matthew confessed. “Thinking about doing that four times… it’s overwhelming but beautiful at the same time.”
He added, “I can’t picture missing out on that. It’s going to be emotional. It’s tough on one hand, but on the other, I just feel so lucky to be such a big part of their lives.”
