The powerful Detroit Lions offensive line took a major hit this offseason, as All-Pro center Frank Ragnow’s retirement and the team’s decision not to re-sign free agent guard Kevin Zeitler, now with the Titans, significantly weakened this once-dominant unit.
Although rookie second-rounder Tate Ratledge may be in line to help replace Ragnow at center or Zeitler at right guard, another name could emerge as the true breakout player. Left guard Christian Mahogany might develop into the Lions’ next top-tier offensive lineman.
Pro Football Focus selected Mahogany for its All-Breakout team for the 2025 season, highlighting his elite production in 144 snaps—ranking in the 99th percentile in true pass set blocking and 97th percentile in avoiding negatively graded run-blocking plays.
Despite losing several key coaches this offseason, Detroit managed to retain offensive line coach Hank Fraley. Known for developing overlooked talent, Fraley may help turn Mahogany into a rising star faster than many anticipate.
Mahogany appeared in parts of seven games last year, starting just one. While the sample size was small, his performance impressed enough to make him a top contender for a starting guard role. A sixth-round pick, Mahogany could soon prove doubters wrong.
Mahogany’s Pro Football Focus grade placed him seventh among 136 qualified guards, showing his potential with powerful run-blocking and nimble feet—especially notable for someone who weighs 332 pounds and has starter-level upside.
If Mahogany excels, Graham Glasgow could slide over to center, allowing Ratledge to stay at right guard, the position he played exclusively at Georgia. If Mahogany struggles, Glasgow and Ratledge might shift to left guard and center, respectively, leaving right guard unsettled.
Though Mahogany is a little-used sixth-rounder with limited experience against top-tier defenders, his brief time on the field has shown enough promise to suggest he could play a major role in helping Detroit move on from Ragnow.
