The Detroit Lions are making the most of their final weeks off before training camp kicks off next month. The 2025 campaign is fast approaching, and it promises to challenge the Lions after experiencing several key losses.
One of the most notable changes came on the coaching side, as Ben Johnson departed to take over as head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes recently appeared on the “Green Light” podcast and opened up about Johnson’s decision. Though he was aware Johnson had interviewed with Chicago, he was surprised that it ended up being his final destination.
Holmes stated, “Why Chicago? I knew he interviewed there, but he also interviewed for several other jobs, so I had no idea which one he’d choose.”
He continued, “I thought Chicago might be the last place he’d land—or maybe I just hoped it would be. I’m happy for him. He’s an incredible coach…”
That reaction likely echoed among fans, considering the Bears are one of Detroit’s biggest divisional foes. The Lions have defeated Chicago in five of their past six meetings, helping shift the balance of power within the NFC North.
Winning games within the division is critical, but now Detroit will be facing one of their former coaches on a rival team’s sideline.
During his time with the Lions, Johnson was considered among the league’s top offensive minds. John Morton now takes over as offensive coordinator, and fans are eager to see what the offense looks like under his leadership.
It’s sure to bring changes, but the fact that Johnson ended up with the Bears still stings for Detroit. From here on, Johnson will be a rival, and the two teams will face off for the first time this season in Week 2.
