Could 2025 Mark the End of Stafford’s NFL Career?

The Los Angeles Rams managed to retain their star quarterback, Matthew Stafford, for two more seasons, despite other franchises offering larger contracts. His new deal is not only favorable to the team’s finances but also lines up perfectly with  Davante Adams’ timeline, creating a strategic championship window for Los Angeles to fully capitalize on.

With a talented group of young players emerging, the Rams appear set for the future even once Stafford steps away. But how much longer can he really go? That’s the question Tyler Sullivan recently explored in a column he published.

Sullivan, who covers sports for CBS Sports, put together a list of players who might retire after the 2025 season. Stafford, nearing the twilight of his career, naturally made the cut—but Sullivan believes there’s a good chance Stafford sticks around beyond 2025.

Even though he’s only been with the Rams for four seasons, Stafford has left an undeniable impact on both the team and the city of Los Angeles. He helped deliver one of the best seasons ever for a wide receiver and secured a long-awaited Super Bowl title for a Rams icon.

The challenge now for the Rams is banking on Stafford avoiding decline as they try to contend in the NFC once more. Aging increases both the risk of injury and the likelihood of a drop-off in performance—two things the franchise must keep an eye on.

I share Sullivan’s perspective—the Rams are so well-positioned that this season may be Stafford’s prime opportunity to secure another championship. His contract runs through the next two seasons, but 2025 might be the team’s clearest path back to the Super Bowl.
