Ex-Lions Wide Receiver Cut Loose by Rival NFC Team Amid Past Controversies

The Los Angeles Rams have officially released wide receiver Quintez Cephus, a former Detroit Lions player from Dan Campbell’s earlier seasons.

Ex-Detroit Lions wideout Quintez Cephus is now back on the market, aiming for another shot in the NFL before the 2025 training camps begin.

On Wednesday, the Rams announced they had waived Cephus from their roster.

Originally a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the 27-year-old began his pro career with Detroit. He recorded 37 receptions, 568 yards, and four touchdowns over three years.

Cephus didn’t log any regular-season appearances with Los Angeles. His last official NFL game action came in 2022.

Back in April 2023, the NFL suspended Cephus indefinitely for violating its gambling policy by betting on league games. He served a year-long suspension.

The Rams didn’t pair Cephus’ departure with another transaction. However, his exit opens a spot on their 90-man offseason squad.

During his time in Detroit, Cephus flashed potential. His rookie year in 2020 remains his peak — totaling 20 catches, 349 yards, and two touchdowns.

Across three seasons with the Lions, Cephus participated in 628 offensive snaps and contributed 131 snaps on special teams.

Post-suspension, Cephus had stints with the Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, and the Rams. He hasn’t suited up for a regular-season game since 2022.

In 2024, Cephus was with the Bills for about two weeks. He went through training camp and preseason with Houston but was released before final cuts.

He signed with the Rams practice squad in September and later inked a futures contract for the 2025 campaign in January.

In college, Cephus totaled 93 catches, 1,496 yards, and 13 touchdowns while at Wisconsin. His college career included significant controversy.

“Cephus was suspended from [Wisconsin’s football team] in August 2018 after being charged with second- and third-degree sexual assault. Prosecutors said two women accused him of assaulting them in his apartment that April while they were too intoxicated to consent. Cephus said the sex was consensual, and one accuser had arranged the encounter,” reported the AP.

“He was acquitted in August 2019 and allowed back by Chancellor Rebecca Blank. The athletic department initially deemed him ineligible, with spokesman Brian Lucas citing missed NCAA credit requirements.”

“The NCAA eventually reinstated him, allowing him to rejoin the 19th-ranked Badgers, who kicked off the season August 30 at South Florida.”

That 2019 season at Wisconsin was Cephus’ most productive — tallying 59 receptions, 901 yards, and seven scores.

It’s highly unlikely Detroit will bring Cephus back, given the current wide receiver talent they have on the roster.

Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams headline the Lions’ pass-catching group. Veterans Tim Patrick and Kalif Raymond round out the top four.

Detroit also added third-rounder Isaac TeSla and seventh-round pick Dominic Lovett to its 2025 draft class. TeSlaa averaged 19.5 yards per catch last season at Arkansas.
