NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams proudly embraces fatherhood to four daughters: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler.
After helping the Rams clinch victory over the Cincinnati Bengals with a 23–20 win in Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the first thing the champion did was find his daughters to celebrate. A joyful NFL-shared Instagram video showed the girls playing in Rams-colored confetti as their dad and mom, Kelly Stafford, joined the celebration.
Just days before the big game, Stafford spoke openly about the importance of his family in his journey. “I couldn’t be in this position without them,” he told PEOPLE, reflecting on his move from the Detroit Lions. “I never would have asked for a trade without knowing I had their full backing.”
Matthew revealed that he’s often asked if he wants a son, but he’s fully happy with his daughters, who have taught him valuable life lessons like patience.
“To be completely honest, they’re the best part of my life,” he said in a 2021 Q&A on Rams.com. “They’ve changed everything for me. You really can’t understand the feeling until you become a parent — and I’ve been fortunate enough to experience that four times. Four amazing little girls. I’m blessed.”
Here’s a closer look at each of Matthew Stafford’s daughters: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler.
Sawyer and Chandler Stafford, Age 8
Kelly and Matthew’s twin daughters, Sawyer J. Stafford and Chandler Page Stafford, were born on March 31, 2017.
The couple revealed the pregnancy via a sweet Instagram post featuring their dogs, Marley and Champ, in October 2016. After facing fertility struggles, Kelly turned to IVF, supported throughout by Matthew.
“It was a tough journey, but so many people go through it and find hope in treatments like IVF — and it definitely worked for us,” Matthew shared during a May 2024 episode of his wife’s podcast.
The twins take cheer and tumbling classes, following in Kelly’s footsteps, as she cheered at the University of Georgia. They’ve also tried T-ball, just like their dad, who played baseball before his football career took off.
When Sawyer and Chandler started Pre-K in August 2021, Kelly reflected emotionally on how quickly they were growing.
“Feels like just yesterday we were in Michigan waiting for them to arrive,” she wrote on Instagram. “Now they’re school-aged. Time flew by. Happy first day to my big girls!”
Fast forward to June 2024 — the girls started first grade and already have dreams in mind: Sawyer wants to become an artist, while Chandler is aiming to be a soccer player.
Hunter Stafford, Age 6
The Staffords welcomed their third daughter, Hunter Hope Stafford, on August 16, 2018.
Kelly revealed her pregnancy during a family beach vacation in April 2018 with an Instagram post that included the twins and a visible baby bump. She noted she had surprised Matthew with the news the previous Christmas.
“It’s been so hard to keep this under wraps,” she wrote beside the beach photo.
Affectionately called “Huntie” by her mom, Hunter is known for her spirited and bold personality. She frequently appears on Kelly’s social media dancing and striking fun poses. Like her big sisters, she also enjoys tumbling and cheer.
Hunter has taken a strong interest in football, often asking questions during games. “She’s always curious about the plays,” Kelly shared on Instagram in July 2023. “It’s sweet to think Matthew will have her to watch games with when he retires
When Kelly was pregnant with Tyler, the family wondered how Hunter would adjust — but she stepped into her big sister role with pride and affection.
“Baby Tyler is HER baby,” Kelly joked in a July 2020 tribute post. “She checks on her the moment she wakes up, finds her pacifier when she cries, and always wants to be in my arms when I’m holding Tyler.”
Tyler Stafford, Age 5
The youngest of the Stafford daughters, Tyler Hall Stafford, arrived on June 26, 2020.
Her birth took place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding a unique layer to parenting.
“It’s already hard enough becoming a parent,” Matthew shared in a 2021 video from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. “Going through that during a pandemic added a whole new level of difficulty.”
Despite the challenges, Tyler thrived. By the time she was 7 months old, she was already in the 93rd percentile for height — towering over most children her age, according to Kelly.
As Tyler grew, Kelly often highlighted her playful and determined spirit. One video from July 2022 showed Tyler trying to sneak snacks from the pantry despite being told no.
By 2024, Tyler was displaying her bold personality in full. In an Instagram clip from August, she was seen confidently climbing a ropes course with her mom cheering her on. She loves doing everything her sisters do — from swimming and soccer to playing arcade games.
When she’s not watching her dad at training camp, Tyler enjoys bonding with her mom. For Mother’s Day 2024, now school-aged Tyler gave Kelly a heartfelt card and spent the day playing together at the park.
“Spent the day with my girl,” Kelly captioned a recap video. “She truly makes me feel like I’m the most loved person in the world.”
