Detroit Lions Lineman Fires Back at Sophie Cunningham Over Anti-Detroit Comments

Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper has fired back online in response to viral remarks made by the WNBA player.

Detroit is set to receive a WNBA expansion team in 2029. Toronto and Portland will welcome new teams in 2026, while Cleveland’s team launches in 2028 and Philadelphia’s in 2030. By then, the WNBA will have 18 franchises.

While speaking with the media, Cunningham caused a stir when she questioned whether players would be thrilled about teams in cities like Detroit.

“You have to listen to your players, too. Like where do they want to play?” she said. “Where are they going to feel excited to play and get fans? I think Miami would’ve been amazing. Nashville is a top spot. Kansas City, awesome market. There’s a big arena downtown that’s empty.”

She then added, “But honestly, I don’t know how pumped people will be about Detroit or (Cleveland).”

Skipper, who’s loved by Lions fans for his toughness and heart, clapped back on social media, hinting Cunningham may not even get to join the new team.

“You ever been there? Pretty good place to play, well not for you now,” Skipper posted.

Red Wings and Tigers owner Chris Ilitch praised the move, calling it a major step forward for Detroit’s sports scene.

“Women’s sports are rising fast, and we’re excited to bring the WNBA to Little Caesars Arena,” Ilitch said. “This is a big win for Detroit and fans in the area. The new team will add to our already diverse sports and entertainment lineup, and we can’t wait for the energy it’ll bring to the city and the arena.”
