It’s now July, which means football is just about back. Detroit Lions training camp is fast approaching, and fans are getting excited for the return of the action.
But with that excitement also comes the tough truth: several players will soon be jobless. Some of the team’s 2025 additions might not even make it through their first training camp in Detroit.
From experienced vets to a rookie who went undrafted, here’s a closer look at some players who may not survive the summer.
Raequan Williams, DT
While Raequan Williams is new to the Lions, fans of Michigan State may recognize him from his college days. The former Spartan went undrafted in 2020 and initially landed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now competing in Detroit, Williams hasn’t played a regular-season snap since 2021 and sits deep on the depth chart. The 28-year-old will need to overcome long odds.
Malik Taylor, WR
Coming out of a smaller program like Ferris State, Malik Taylor has already beaten the odds by reaching the NFL. The undrafted receiver from 2019 has stuck around despite limited opportunities.
At the moment, Taylor is likely slotted anywhere between the WR7 and WR11 range. That makes his path to the roster a tough one.
Rock Ya-Sin, CB
Drafted in the second round out of Temple in 2019, Rock Ya-Sin’s stock has dropped significantly. He played just 8% of snaps last season with the 49ers and isn’t guaranteed a role.
Though he brings veteran experience, Ya-Sin could easily be on the outside looking in when final cuts are made.
Zach Horton, TE/FB
Zach Horton brings the kind of energy Dan Campbell loves, but that might not be enough. The undrafted rookie out of Indiana offers some flexibility as a tight end and fullback.
Still, he has a steep climb ahead to earn a spot on the final 53-man roster. The competition may simply be too deep.
