Kelly Stafford Opens Up About Her ‘Fair’a legal agreement that they sign before she get married to Husband Matthew Stafford
Kelly Stafford spoke openly about how she and her husband, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, came to a peaceful agreement on a prenuptial contract before they married.
“I had been with my husband a long time, but I was still young and pretty clueless about all of it,” Kelly, 36, said on her podcast, The Morning After, on Monday, July 7. “We had already talked about prenups before getting engaged. I was immature and thought, ‘Aren’t we planning our divorce before we’ve even started our marriage? I don’t love that idea.’”
Kelly, 36, and Matthew, 37, wed in April 2015 after first meeting while attending the University of Georgia. Their relationship began in February 2009.
“But I also had to think of it from another angle and say, ‘If we never split up, this won’t even matter,’” Kelly continued. “So why wouldn’t I just go ahead with it?”
When describing the prenup, Kelly noted, “It was incredibly fair. He was definitely generous about everything.”
The couple’s wedding took place nearly six years after Matthew was chosen as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He then signed a six-year, $72 million deal with the team in April 2009, followed by a three-year, $53 million extension in July 2013.
Kelly admitted prenups often have a “bad reputation,” but she eventually viewed it differently, saying the document gives “you and your partner control over what happens if you ever divorce.”
“I don’t think most people realize the state controls it, but they do,” Kelly explained. “In the end, it’s a government matter. So setting your own terms makes way more sense.”
She said creating the agreement turned into a joint effort between her and Matthew.
“What helped us a lot was that as soon as we got engaged, we started working on it,” Kelly said. “I told him, ‘I don’t want to be close to the wedding still dealing with this.’ At the time, I still had a really negative attitude toward it.”
Kelly concluded, “I knew I loved this man and he loved me. This was just part of the process. And that was completely okay.”
Since becoming husband and wife, Kelly and Matthew have had four daughters: twins Sawyer and Chandler, 8, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 5.
Matthew was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in January 2021.
This May, the quarterback agreed to a new deal with the team that will pay him $44 million for the 2025 season.
