Jared Goff Says He Felt ”Betrayed by Sean McVay and Rams after Traded to Lions

Jared Goff has confidently helped transform the Detroit Lions into a Super Bowl contender—ever since that major January 2021 trade. Still, the Goff-for-Matthew Stafford deal continues to leave a lasting impression on him.

Goff has since voiced a candid take on the trade that rocked the NFL. He confessed he felt “betrayed” by the Los Angeles Rams and head coach Sean McVay.

Detroit’s star signal-caller looked back on that pivotal moment during his appearance on the newest season of “Quarterback” on Netflix, which is now streaming. Goff didn’t hold back about the surprise of getting McVay’s call.

“Three weeks after the season ended, I get a call from Sean—and I wasn’t expecting it,” he recalls. “He tells me I’m being traded to Detroit, and I’m like, ‘Wait, what? Okay, wow. What is going on?’”

He later saw the trade all over Twitter. Goff added he clearly felt hurt by how the Rams handled it.

“You feel unwanted, like you’ve been tossed aside. For me, what stung most was there wasn’t even a heads-up. No ‘Hey, we might move on’ type of talk. Nothing,” Goff reflects. “You hope it’s not a total shock and that there’s enough professionalism to talk it through—to explain what’s happening and why.”

McVay, for his part, has since said he regrets how he managed the process—especially how fast it all happened without giving Goff a fair warning.

Since then, Goff has had the last laugh in the Rams-Lions rivalry, leading two wins over L.A.—including snapping Detroit’s long playoff win drought in 2023.
