Jared Goff made a fun wager with a teammate during the 2024 NFL season, and now he’s following through after losing the bet.
In an episode of the Netflix show Quarterback, Goff shared that he made a preseason bet with Lions punter Jack Fox. So what exactly was the deal? Let’s hear it from Goff.
“I told Jack Fox at the start of the season, ‘If you lead the league in net punting, I’ll buy you Bud Light for a year,’” Goff said. “And right after the last game, he goes, ‘There it is, you owe me for a year.’”
Fox has always been among the top punters in the NFL, but since he’d never led in net punting before, Goff likely figured the odds were in his favor. But Fox had other plans — and beer turned out to be powerful motivation, because he delivered one of the finest punting seasons ever.
The 28-year-old finished the year with a 46.2-yard net average, setting a new all-time record for the highest net punting average in league history. He surpassed the previous mark set by Johnny Hekker, who averaged 46 net yards in 2016 for the Rams.
There have only been five seasons in NFL history where a punter averaged more than 45 net yards. Fox had previously averaged 44.8 in 2020 — tied for seventh-best ever — but didn’t top the league that year due to Bailey ranking ahead.
Fox has been elite since debuting in 2020, though his 2023 campaign was subpar by his standards, with career lows in gross (46.4) and net average (41.7). Goff likely wanted to inspire a bounce-back season — and Fox answered in record-setting style.
What’s unclear is the exact amount of beer Fox will receive. For one person, a year’s supply might mean six beers a week — for another, six per day. Splitting the difference, a 12-pack a week seems fair.
That would mean Goff is on the hook for 624 beers. At $12.99 per 12-pack, he’ll pay roughly $675 for losing the bet. Or maybe he’ll take Saquon Barkley’s route and deliver a truckload of Bud Light to Fox’s home.
Whatever the cost, Goff lives in Michigan, where you get 10 cents per bottle for recycling. If he’s savvy, he’ll ask Fox to return the empties and claim the refund — a pretty decent move. Not that he needs it — Goff signed a four-year, $212 million extension last year.
Aside from Fox, another big winner might be Netflix. Bud Light came aboard as a sponsor for Quarterback, and Goff’s beer bet may have helped inspire that deal.
