Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinsonis officially back in action after suffering a major leg injury late in the 2024 season. Hutchinson fractured both his tibia and fibula during a Week 15 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, abruptly ending what had been another impressive year. He had tallied 7.5 sacks before the injury and remained a vital, steady force for Detroit’s defense.
Speaking on the With the First Pick podcast with Ryan Wilson, Hutchinson said his recovery has brought him to a great place both physically and mentally as he prepares for his fourth NFL season.
“Each season, I’ve been able to grow physically and mentally,” Hutchinson said. “Even with this offseason’s rehab, I truly feel like I’m in a great place and exactly where I’m supposed to be right now.”
Recovery began right after his emergency procedure, starting in the pool and gradually moving into running about six months later. Fully cleared now, Hutchinson says he’s ready for training camp and the upcoming 2025 season.
The Lions ended the 2024 regular season with a franchise-best 15-2 record, led by a top-five offense and a defense that delivered when needed. But injuries struck at the wrong time. Their playoff hopes ended in the Divisional Round loss to Washington, a game where Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Carlton Davis were all absent.
Having Hutchinson back is essential. When at full strength, he offers both pass-rushing power and a leadership presence the Lions’ young defense depends on. To repeat or improve on last year’s results, Detroit will need Hutchinson healthy all season.
The 2025 slate won’t be easy. Lions’ opponents had a combined .571 win rate last year, and sportsbooks have set Detroit’s projected win total at 10.5 heading into the year.
That schedule means Detroit’s front line must be ready from the start. Hutchinson, in particular, will be expected to return to the form that had him in early Defensive Player of the Year talks before his injury.
