Club World Cup: Maresca explains how Chelsea exposed three PSG players in their win

Enzo Maresca disclosed the tactical brilliance that led Chelsea to their 3-0 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final.

Chelsea entered Sunday’s showdown at MetLife Stadium as clear underdogs but delivered a superb performance to stun the reigning Champions League winners.

Cole Palmer impressed with a pair of clinical goals before assisting Joao Pedro, who sealed the win with a clever chip — his third goal in just two appearances for Chelsea after joining from Brighton during the tournament.

PSG have arguably been Europe’s standout team this campaign and reached the final with a dominant 4-0 victory over Real Madrid.

Yet Luis Enrique’s men were outsmarted tactically for much of the game, visibly showing their irritation late on and following the final whistle.

Very few sides have managed such a commanding display against the French champions this year. Maresca explained that unlocking PSG’s defense relied on targeting the space behind their midfield, particularly on the left flank.

“We studied them and noticed we could exploit that area, and one of our goals came from there. It was just part of the strategy — as always, we look to adapt our plans and help the players perform at their best. Today it came together well. Still, it’s down to the whole team’s hard work, and I’m proud of them — they truly earned this moment.”
