Jameson Williams Trade Rumors Lightly Resurface via Lions Insider

During March’s NFL league meetings, Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes confirmed that wide receiver Jameson Williams would have his fifth-year option exercised. But when asked about a possible extension, Holmes offered a more uncertain response.

Holmes explained, “There are a lot of potential extensions, but it’s hard to predict financially. Wide receivers are expensive. Still, it’s a good problem to have.”

Williams did take a leap forward in 2024. He improved as an all-around receiver, displayed more maturity, and broke the 1,000-yard mark for the first time.

Still, concerns lingered, including a PED suspension, a gun-related incident with no charges, and several fines for celebrating touchdowns. Cleaning up those issues will be key to earning a big second contract.

In April, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer floated the idea of trading Williams in two different articles. Though nothing materialized, Holmes insisted trading him wasn’t even considered.

This offseason has seen increased buzz around Williams, with growing expectations for his continued progress. The fifth-year option gives the Lions time to assess his long-term role and let him boost his value.

The Athletic recently had each NFL beat writer identify a contract to watch, and Lions writer Colton Pouncy chose Williams as the clear pick while laying out the full situation.

Having two expensive wideouts isn’t impossible, but Holmes noted that paying Williams would affect other contracts—and warned against following the Bengals’ model.

Pouncy didn’t say a trade is looming or likely, but it remains a possibility. If talks stall next offseason, a trade could become a real topic.
