Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave an update Monday morning regarding the status of veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone.

Campbell said Anzalone—who didn’t participate in the offseason program—“crushed” the team’s conditioning test, came in at the right weight, and was “ready to go.”

Still, when asked if Anzalone would practice Monday, Campbell confirmed the 30-year-old would remain out for a second straight day.

“I don’t see him practicing today — I don’t,” Campbell said. “It’s a hamstring, so we’ll see where it goes.”

That comment ends speculation that Anzalone was staging a “hold-in” while pushing for a contract extension—an idea Campbell had already dismissed the day prior.

“No way, right? I refuse to believe that,” Campbell said. “I refuse to believe that.”

Anzalone’s absence was first believed to be tied to his contract, with this season being the final year of his deal. He has a void year in 2026, with a $7.2 million cap hit and $6 million base salary.

It’s unclear if a new deal will be reached soon. But Anzalone does have support from a teammate who recently received one.

Linebacker Derrick Barnes, a fifth-year player and close friend of Anzalone, spoke after Monday’s practice. Asked if Anzalone’s deal should be handled soon, Barnes shared his thoughts.

“Yeah, I mean, honestly, I feel like that’s kind of—he got to do what’s best for him,” Barnes said. “Obviously, that’s my guy, that’s my dog, and he’s a great leader for us and stuff. So I like to see him get everything he wanted.

“But then again, I kind of say I love it and keep my head on what’s going on right now. But man, I love Alex, man. He deserves the world. He put the work in. But I kind of want to focus on what I got now and what’s going on, and then I pray every day for him and hope that everything works out in his favor.”

Last year, Anzalone also skipped offseason workouts. While he recovers from the hamstring injury, Ezekiel Turner and Detroit native DaRon Gilbert are getting more snaps.
