Surprising Lions roster cut wouldn’t be surprising in typical situations

As the Detroit Lions continue their rise to prominence, difficult roster decisions come with trimming down to the 53-man squad. In recent seasons, NFL teams must meet one league-wide deadline to finalize rosters before the regular season, resulting in a wave of cuts all at once.

Each preseason, familiar names are let go, and with that context, Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network recently shared one surprising cut candidate for every NFL team entering training camp.

Infante’s pick for Detroit? Defensive lineman Josh Paschal

Paschal posted career-bests last year with 14 games, 10 starts, and 549 snaps, finishing with two sacks, 21 tackles, and five tackles for loss. Despite those modest numbers, his 5.5% pass rush win rate and low PFF grade put him outside the top 100 edge defenders.

The Lions took him in the top 50 of the 2022 draft, but injuries have followed Paschal. Even when healthy last season, he didn’t stand out as Detroit’s defense was plagued with injuries. He’s had chances, but hasn’t capitalized.

On its own, cutting Paschal wouldn’t be shocking. But Infante’s prediction is complicated now by Paschal opening camp on the Non-Football Injury list with an unknown issue. Dan Campbell noted early September as his return timeline—after roster cuts are made.

If things go poorly, Paschal could land on injured reserve and be out at least four games. Timing could protect him for now, but a cut still looms. While his status may spare him during camp, his exit could just be delayed until season’s end.
