Breaking news: Lions Eye Reunion With Free Agent Amid Key Injury Setback

Following a season-ending injury to Levi Onwuzurike, the Detroit Lions might reunite with veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith ahead of the 2025 regular season. Reports confirm the Lions are moving forward without a key defensive lineman who tallied 13 QB hits, 28 tackles, and one tackle for loss last year. After collapsing in the playoffs to the Washington Commanders, Detroit is aiming to avoid a repeat. Fortunately, they have a chance to add a seasoned free agent, and Smith is at the top of the list.

Drafted in the fourth round in 2015, Smith joined the Lions last season via trade following Aidan Hutchinson’s injury. He produced solid stats but was released before bonus payouts due to cap constraints. Still, the Lions’ leadership never ruled out a return, and this may be their ideal chance. The team now has a glaring need for pass-rushing depth and may look to bring Smith back on a short-term deal.

That said, Detroit won’t be alone in the race for Smith, with several teams expected to show interest.

The Washington Commanders are emerging from a rebuild, as shown by their recent Von Miller acquisition. With Dante Fowler Jr. gone, they could use another steady rusher alongside Deatrich Wise Jr. Smith may be aging, but his experience fits the Commanders’ current win-now mentality.

The Saints’ defense is getting older, especially with veterans DeMario Davis and Cameron Jordan leading the rush. After acquiring Davon Godchaux to bolster their offense, New Orleans may look to reinforce the defense too. With a middling offense expected, a strong defense might give them a competitive edge this season.

Though the Chargers need offensive reinforcements after Mike Williams’s retirement, defense remains a concern. With Da’Shawn Hand, Teair Tart, and Otito Ogbonnia up front, they lack a veteran force. Jim Harbaugh’s vision of physicality could benefit from Smith’s presence, even if only on a one-year contract.

The Baltimore Ravens lost Jadeveon Clowney, Patrick Queen, and Malik Harrison, weakening their identity. Their move to sign John Jenkins won’t be enough alone. They need more tough, experienced defenders, and Smith could bring back the grit they’re missing as they chase another Super Bowl shot.
