Jameson Williams shares how John Morton could help elevate his game

Jameson Williams had a breakout 2024 campaign, but the Lions’ new offensive coordinator might help take him to even greater heights this season.

Last season marked a major step forward for Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams. He made notable strides, finishing with over 1,000 receiving yards and the NFL’s second-highest yards-per-catch average at 17.3.

However, Williams still has room to elevate in his fourth year as he looks to earn a big second contract. While Ben Johnson was a highly respected play-caller, there’s an argument that new coordinator John Morton, with his background coaching receivers, might connect with Williams differently.

Even with Williams’ rise in 2024, the Lions actually saw a continued dip in EPA on deep play-action passes since Morton was last on staff in 2022.

After Tuesday’s training camp practice, Williams spoke to reporters and shared thoughts on Morton’s impact so far.

“He (Morton) attacks all phases of the game,” Williams said. “He’s super aggressive. That’s what I really like about him. I love the way he coaches, the way he designs plays, and just how he approaches everything.”

Williams appears more confident than ever heading into a pivotal year, which aligns with his increasing maturity.

“Year 4, training camp, no outside noise. Just locked in on football,” Williams said. “My main goal is just to go out there, make plays, and help my team win.”

When asked about where he’s improved most as a receiver going into Year 4, Williams didn’t hesitate.

“My route running. Coach Johnny Mo (Morton) is letting me run a wider variety of routes,” Williams said. “I always knew I could, and he’s putting me in the right spots. I’m improving with angles and cuts—just learning how to sharpen each route. I’d say my route tree is more complete now.”

Williams’ elite speed ensures he’ll always be dangerous on deep balls. But last year, he also impressed on intermediate routes, where his speed turned short gains into long runs. With Morton broadening his responsibilities and Williams growing in confidence, the 2025 season could be his biggest yet.
