Dan Campbell Encourages Lions Fans to Embrace Jameson Williams Breakout

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is coming off a breakout year in his third NFL season. In 2024, Williams made a major leap, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards and scoring seven touchdowns for the first time.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Williams aims to continue his upward trend and solidify his role as a key target alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown. Since training camp kicked off on July 19, Williams has shown signs of further development that could elevate Detroit’s offense even more.

The Lions believed they had landed a rare playmaker when they traded up to select Williams 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, his rookie year was limited to just six games following an ACL injury suffered in the National Championship at Alabama.

In his second season, Williams appeared in 12 games, hauling in 24 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns. Jumping from 354 yards to over 1,000 was one of the biggest highlights of Detroit’s 15-2 campaign that led to a second straight NFC North crown.

Head coach Dan Campbell has taken notice of Williams’ continued growth this offseason, especially during individual drills in training camp.

“His route discipline, the strength he’s added, his explosiveness—he’s starting to figure it out,” Campbell said. “He’s learning how to use his body, he’s getting more precise. He’s beginning to unlock his full potential.”

Even with his strong showing in camp, Williams still has room to grow before the Lions begin their 2025 season. In addition to his receiving, Williams has shown flashes of brilliance as a ball carrier.

He finished last season with 61 rushing yards in the regular season and added a 61-yard rushing touchdown in Detroit’s 45-31 playoff loss to the Commanders. Campbell praised Williams’ aggressive mindset and urged him to maintain that approach.

“That’s something I loved about him coming out of college,” Campbell said. “We want that rise, that progress—but don’t lose that toughness. We’ve got guys who can break big runs, just finish strong and handle your role.”
