The Detroit Lions have had some intriguing visitors at training camp before, but perhaps none as notable from a football viewpoint as the guest they hosted on July 28.
Jon Gruden, a coach across multiple decades with playoff wins and a Super Bowl title, brought valuable insight during his time in Detroit. Gruden also shares a connection with new offensive coordinator John Morton, having helped him rise through the coaching ranks. That bond led to their reunion in Allen Park.
Gruden believes the Lions are trending in the right direction, thanks largely to quarterback Jared Goff. As an offensive-minded coach, Gruden paid special attention to Goff’s play and remains highly impressed with his performance.
In fact, Gruden compared Goff to another iconic California signal-caller — Joe Montana — as he explained to reporters including Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News.
“You know, I don’t like to toss out comparisons. But the number, the rhythm, and the poise he plays with have always reminded me of (Joe) Montana when I was with the (San Francisco) 49ers. My dad coached with Joe at Notre Dame. Their personalities and styles are alike. Goff’s a tough guy in that pocket. I’m a big fan.”
Gruden had the chance to watch Goff closely during practice and later met with him in person. He appeared thrilled to link up with Goff, even posting a picture of their meetup on his X page.
Quarterback performance often defines a team’s success, and Gruden clearly thinks the Lions are well-positioned with Goff under center. A strong year from Goff could help resolve some early doubts heading into 2025.
Gruden believes Goff is the ideal quarterback to operate Detroit’s system. John Morton will be tasked with managing play-calling duties, and the Lions appear secure with him leading the offense.
Gruden, who saw Morton grow from a junior assistant and pushed him to rise, praised his dedication and tireless nature — traits he believes will serve Detroit well.
“He’s relentless. Detroit fans might not see it, but his work ethic is second to none. The guy’s crazy. People used to call me crazy — he’s even crazier. He’s passionate, creative, and ultra-competitive. I’m excited to see how the Lions start the season.”
Gruden’s reputation as an inventive play designer makes his endorsement of Morton meaningful. With a deep arsenal of talent, Morton’s schemes could reveal new dimensions this year.
During his Detroit visit, Gruden found both a quarterback he admires and a coaching staff he deeply respects. It’s a welcome bit of buzz during the grind of training camp.
