Former Lions starter receives verdict on 2024 domestic violence case

NFL reporter Aaron Wilson has shared that free-agent cornerback Cameron Sutton, who spent one season with the Detroit Lions, has resolved his legal issues and can now move forward.

According to Wilson, Sutton’s agent confirmed that all legal matters and charges connected to a 2024 Florida case have officially been dropped.

While playing for Detroit, Sutton faced a domestic violence accusation after reportedly assaulting and choking his then-girlfriend. The incident occurred March 7 near Tampa, Fla., and led to a third-degree felony charge.

Documents obtained by the Tampa Bay Times claimed Sutton lifted his girlfriend, slammed her into a wall, bit her neck, and choked her until she briefly passed out.

Sutton left the scene before officers arrived and went silent, cutting off communication. Authorities in Hillsborough County later issued an arrest warrant. At the time, Sutton was inside the Lions’ facility.

Detroit swiftly released Sutton upon learning the full details of the alleged assault.

“He was actually here (when the report came out),” team president Rod Wood told Fox 2 last March. “He showed up downstairs to work out. He was with our strength staff. Other team members spoke with him in person. He left, and we released him the following day. No one’s heard from him since.”

After his release, Sutton returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract for a second stint, but missed the first eight games due to suspension.

In his Pittsburgh return, Sutton played nine games but posted only 15 tackles and three pass breakups, and the team declined to bring him back for another season.
