4 Emerging Lions to Monitor in Hall of Fame Matchup vs. Chargers

Although the Detroit Lions won’t be playing any of their regular starters or their top two draft picks in Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, several lesser-known names will get a chance to shine, especially with injuries piling up ahead of the true preseason slate.

First- and second-round rookies Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge will sit out, along with the rest of Detroit’s first-team group. That opens the door for fans to focus on depth players and late-round picks like receiver Isaac TeSlaa and edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein.

These two, along with a couple of others vying for a roster spot, are worth watching closely in this exhibition.

Ahmed Hassanein

Hassanein has impressed with his attitude and approach throughout training camp. A sixth-rounder from Boise State who only recently picked up football, he’s viewed as a raw talent with high upside for Detroit’s defensive front. Earning second-team reps in camp already shows how quickly he’s grasped the pass rush fundamentals.

Expect him to get plenty of snaps Thursday. Watch for jersey No. 61 coming off the edge and trying to bring pressure on Trey Lance.

Isaac TeSlaa

TeSlaa entered camp as a bit of a wildcard after being selected in the third round by Detroit. The Arkansas transfer didn’t post big numbers in college, but he offers a rare blend of size, athleticism, and catch ability that could translate well in contested catch situations.

With the top wide receivers not dressing, TeSlaa should see extended action. Quarterback Hendon Hooker should be excited to test out his 6-foot-4 target throughout the game.

Kyle Allen

With Hendon Hooker likely leading the offense for much of the night, he’ll be sharing quarterback duties with Kyle Allen, who’s competing to be Goff’s primary backup. Allen, formerly of the Panthers, brings 19 NFL starts of experience. As reported by Lions insider Tim Twentyman, his objective is simple: compete, execute, and guide the offense efficiently.
