There’s a reason why Kyle Allen has never stuck long with any NFL team, and the Lions got a full display of those issues in their preseason opener. The need to upgrade the backup spot behind Jared Goff became clearer than ever. Allen wasn’t the only disappointment, though—Hendon Hooker also looked completely overwhelmed.
What made the showing worse was Allen’s inability to move the offense against defenders who likely won’t play this season. Instead of standing out, he stalled drives and kept giving the ball away.
Of Allen’s two interceptions, the worst came on a comeback route where he stared down the receiver, giving the corner a clear read. Though the route wasn’t perfect, the defender reacted fast due to Allen’s eyes and made the pick. That turnover was returned deep into Lions territory, allowing Trey Lance to add another touchdown. It was a perfect example of how Detroit needs a better option.
If Goff misses time, it’s fair to say the Lions’ season is in serious danger. While most NFL teams struggle without their starter, many still have a backup who can survive a week or two. Detroit owes it to themselves and the fans to recognize the problem and replace Allen.
What Allen showed Thursday is who he has always been. The film over the years supports it—he simply can’t be trusted to manage a game. Whether it’s through a trade or bringing in someone like Carson Wentz, the Lions must give themselves a fighting chance if Goff goes down. Allen’s only consistent trait is turning the ball over.
This is why Allen has never lasted long anywhere. Teams quickly see that he can’t be counted on and isn’t someone you want taking snaps in a meaningful game. Detroit now faces an urgent need to act and fix the issue before it’s too late.
