Paul Joyce Provides New Insight on Alexander Isak’s Potential Liverpool Move

Newcastle are unlikely to allow Alexander Isak to join Liverpool unless they can sign adequate replacements in time, according to journalist Paul Joyce.

The Sweden international is still Liverpool’s main transfer priority ahead of the September 1 deadline, but any deal hinges on Newcastle securing a new striker before then.

The Magpies have already lost out on several summer targets, such as Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Hugo Ekitike, all of whom joined other Premier League sides.

They also appear to be falling behind in the chase for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with Manchester United currently leading the race for the Slovenia star.

Speaking on Off The Ball, Joyce stated Liverpool’s pursuit may falter if Newcastle can’t bring in a suitable replacement for Isak in the coming weeks:

“I think Newcastle still control the situation. They’re clearly looking for reinforcements, and those would be potential replacements for Isak. They’ve had difficulties doing that.

“When you talk about well-run clubs, Newcastle’s struggles stand out. They don’t have a sporting director right now, and that’s clearly causing major issues.

“They’ve already missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Ekitike, who went to Liverpool, and possibly Sesko, who now looks likely to join United.

“So until Newcastle resolve their incoming transfers, it complicates Liverpool’s chances of signing Isak, in my opinion.

“It’s hard to imagine Newcastle letting go of their top scorer from last season — the man who helped them secure Champions League football and scored in the Carabao Cup against Liverpool — without getting proper replacements.

“Liverpool are willing to pay. There’s talk of a £150 million price tag from Newcastle. I personally don’t think Liverpool will meet that number; it feels like poor value to them.”

Liverpool previously had a £110 million-plus offer rejected by Newcastle, who remain adamant on their £150 million asking price.

Isak has become one of the world’s top strikers during his time at St James’ Park and had a standout 2024/25 campaign under Eddie Howe.

The 25-year-old netted 27 goals and added six assists in 42 appearances in all competitions, helping Newcastle place fifth and secure Champions League football for 2025/26.
