Newcastle have set their sights on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as their primary target to replace Alexander Isak, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.
The St James’ Park club are scouring the market for attacking reinforcements following Isak’s determination to leave – he is not expected to feature again for the Magpies and may depart before the window closes.
Despite strong links to Brentford star Yoane Wissa, Mateta has emerged as another Premier League-proven candidate on their radar.
Galetti reports that Palace have recently increased their asking price for the “exceptional” French forward – now seeking around £40m after another impressive season at Selhurst Park.
Mateta netted 17 goals and contributed four assists in 46 games last season, also helping Palace secure the Community Shield triumph at Wembley last weekend.
According to Galetti, Newcastle may launch a bid for Mateta if Isak exits during the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
Reports on Tuesday suggested Isak is resolute in never playing for Newcastle again amid heavy interest from Liverpool in a late summer swoop.
Liverpool’s initial £120m proposal was rejected by Newcastle, who are holding firm at £150m and so far refusing to consider a lower offer.
Their position might soften if a bid nearer that figure arrives and they can secure a replacement in time, having already failed to land several attacking targets this summer.
Eddie Howe’s side have missed out on Liam Delap, Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who all opted for other Premier League sides.
Newcastle’s recruitment has gathered momentum recently, sealing a move for ex-AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw and advancing negotiations for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.
They have also brought in former Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who joins on a season-long loan.
