Wayne Rooney predicted Liverpool to win the Premier League even without signing Alexander Isak – but feels the Newcastle forward would elevate them further.
Rooney believes Liverpool would be “unbeatable” if they secure a deal for Isak as Arne Slot aims to defend his Premier League crown.
The Reds dominated last season’s title race under the Dutch coach and have been bold in the market to stay ahead. They shattered the British record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
Hugo Ekitike also arrived to spearhead the attack after an £80million move from Frankfurt. Yet Liverpool still push for Isak after he voiced his wish to leave Newcastle.
Newcastle have resisted, rejecting an offer over £100m from Anfield, insisting the striker is not for sale. Isak is pushing to leave, declaring he has played his last match at St James’ Park. Rooney says his arrival would be frightening for rivals.
He told Match of the Day: “I already think Liverpool are favourites for the title, but if Isak comes in they’ll be unbeatable. The quality they have. Replacing Trent was huge because so many goals came from that flank and I think Frimpong can really fill that role.”
Frimpong, like Wirtz, joined from Leverkusen, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Dutch right-back has been highly creative and Liverpool hope he matches the attacking output of their former star.
Rooney also tipped Rio Ngumoha to be the standout young player. The teenager impressed in pre-season, with Slot saying: “I see him in training and matches, and his impact is really encouraging.”
The ex-striker also backed Manchester United to return to the Champions League despite last year’s 15th-place finish – their worst Premier League showing. Spending over £200m, including on Benjamin Sesko, Rooney believes they are close to a major jump.
He said: “I still think they need one or two more signings, but with Amorim I see the progress, and I think they’ll scrape into the top five.”
