The £15million departure of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United and Joe Willock’s recent injury have intensified the spotlight on the midfield position.

Ramsey has been on Eddie Howe’s radar for some time, with the 24-year-old first linked to St James’ Park in January 2024. A year and a half later, the player is now on the brink of completing the move.

The ex-England youth international is set to arrive on Tyneside on Thursday evening for his medical and to finalise a £40million transfer. However, he is not expected to make his debut against Villa this weekend.

Ramsey is poised to become Newcastle’s fourth summer arrival, following Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, and Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.

Notably, Romano’s update received a like from Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who hopes to link up with Ramsey at St James’ Park in the near future.

Wissa has told Brentford he wishes to join Newcastle, with a move likely once the West London club secure a replacement. It has been confirmed the 28-year-old will not feature in the Bees’ Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Brentford boss Keith Andrews told BBC Sport: “I’ve decided he is not (available). It’s been a very disrupted pre-season and the interest in Yoane is very obvious.

“As head coach, I want Yoane in the squad and part of the first team setup. I see that. But I fully understand his circumstances. I’ve got a strong relationship with him, and that won’t change. Still, we must focus on the players who are prepared.”
