Liverpool

Liverpool finalize terms for a six-year agreement with their next target, Fabrizio Romano confirms.

The Reds begin their Premier League title defence at Anfield on Friday night as they host Bournemouth in the opening match of the 2025-26 campaign.

Liverpool clinched the league title in Arne Slot’s debut season and are now aiming to retain it – something they’ve not managed since the 1980s.

With the new season here, the transfer window stays open for just over two more weeks. A deal is already in place to sign Giovanni Leoni from Serie A club Parma, and more signings could still follow if Liverpool finalise moves for Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Leoni transfer

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Leoni has signed a six-year deal with Liverpool and completed most of his medical on Merseyside, providing the latest update on his move to the club.

Liverpool have usually handed new signings five-year contracts in recent seasons, but opted to extend Leoni’s by an extra year. The same was done with Ekitike, while other signings have signed deals for five years.

Romano wrote on X: “Giovanni Leoni has completed main part of his medical and signs his contract as new Liverpool player!”

“Exclusive detail in addition: contract will be valid until June 2031, six year deal at Liverpool. Official announcement to follow this week.”

Arne Slot addresses Liverpool’s transfer activity

Speaking to Sky Sports about Liverpool’s transfer plans, Slot said he hopes to bring in at least one more attacking player. He commented: “I see Hugo mainly as a number nine that could also play from the left or play together with another number nine.

“It’s clear that with Darwin gone and Luis Diaz gone, and even last season, we had five or six options. I think, again, Diogo, I need to mention him as well.

“So yeah, we need to have one more attacker, at least.”

When asked about Leoni, Slot confirmed an agreement had been reached with Parma but declined to speak about Palace defender Marc Guehi, although reports say personal terms have already been settled.

Slot stated: “He’s not our player. Unfortunately, he was the captain of the team who we lost to last Sunday. If you want to have any talks about him you should go to Palace and \[manager Oliver] Glasner and ask him about it.”
