Liverpool transfer ‘signal’ to Alexander Isak’s agent will leave him ‘furious’

The Swedish striker has come under fire from Newcastle fans for trying to push through a move, with chants of “there’s only one greedy b******” aimed in his direction during the 0-0 draw at Villa Park. And former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster insists Liverpool share some blame for the current toxic situation.

The ex-Wrexham stopper argues that the Premier League champions likely encouraged Isak to stir things up through his agent. According to Foster, the way the forward has gone about matters means Liverpool are now his only realistic destination, as he has damaged his relationship with Newcastle.

Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Foster explained: “He has to join Liverpool, because right now that’s probably the only club willing to take him on.”

“Isak will be angry as well, because I’m certain somebody from Liverpool has spoken to his agent saying, ‘We want you, push for a transfer or cause a fuss and we’ll sign you.’ But the move still hasn’t happened.

“I think he must take responsibility for this and issue a statement. He has to be upfront and truthful with everyone. Liverpool also know his time at Newcastle is over, and they’re not going to increase their offer anymore.”

Anthony Gordon filled in as a false nine against Villa in Isak’s absence, but Newcastle failed to score. The club may still bring in reinforcements before the deadline, with Gonçalo Ramos and Yoane Wissa among their options.

Meanwhile, Foster believes the hostility from supporters will eventually force the deal through. The former England international labelled the saga “ugly” and said a resolution needs to come quickly.

He added: “Newcastle supporters are unique. This club is part of their identity, and he’s disrespected them. He’s finished here, he’s done, and he won’t play again for Newcastle, but he’s managed to get what he wanted.

“The board saw that reaction [the chants] at full-time and thought, ‘We’ve got to sell him.’ It’s a dreadful way to handle things, but that’s football today, and that’s the reality of the game.”
