Shock as Newcastle player beats Elanga to become second quickest in the Premier League this weekend
Newcastle United’s lightning-fast attack nearly earned them a win over Aston Villa.
Anthony Elanga had a chance to display his incredible pace in front of Newcastle United fans, sprinting in behind the defence after a perfect ball from Sandro Tonali. Unfortunately, Elanga’s effort was denied by the keeper.
Still, it was an early glimpse of his speed, and both Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes had several opportunities to break forward as well.
Eddie Howe’s attacking options are stacked with pace, but it was actually a late substitute who registered the highest top speed at Villa Park.
Will Osula clocked the highest speed for Newcastle United
You’d expect Elanga or Gordon to top the speed chart for Newcastle United, but it was actually Will Osula who took that honour.
Despite coming on in the 90th minute, Osula managed to hit the highest recorded speed for the club this weekend.
In just a few minutes of stoppage time, Osula was clocked at 34.2 km/h—making him the second fastest player in the Premier League this season, behind Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli.
Newcastle also had the fifth quickest player this week, with Gordon reaching a top speed of 33 km/h.
Elanga wasn’t far behind either. He reached 32.7 km/h against Villa, putting him 10th in the league for top speed.
Will Osula didn’t get much faith against Aston Villa
It was a lively cameo from Osula, as he stretched Villa’s backline and got into dangerous spaces, making a real attempt to find a winner.
But the time on the pitch was limited. Howe only used Osula for six minutes, which says a lot about the current pecking order.
Newcastle were clearly in need of a striker at Villa Park, but the 22-year-old only got a few moments at the end. He mostly warmed the bench, while main man Alexander Isak wasn’t even in the squad.
Newcastle’s draw with Villa underlined just how badly they need a striker. Osula may have blistering speed, but Howe doesn’t seem to view him as the solution.
