Newcastle United’s search for a striker has taken a blow after Porto forward Samu sustained an untimely injury.
AS have provided an update, revealing that the attacker was forced off in Monday’s 2-0 win against Gil Vicente after picking up the knock.
Signs suggest the setback could be serious, with his “visible anger” clear as he left the field, hiding his face in his shirt while crying. Once on the bench, the youngster was also spotted in tears.
The injury looks like a big obstacle and comes at the worst moment, as Samu has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United. The Premier League side had identified him as a possible replacement for Alexander Isak, who is still pushing for a transfer to Liverpool.
That deal would likely only go through if a successor is secured, but so far Newcastle’s search for one has brought little success.
Samu might have been the solution, but his worrying exit means he could now face weeks or even months out of action for Porto.
Questioned post-match about the player’s condition, Porto coach Francesco Farioli gave no reassurance for either the forward or Newcastle’s transfer ambitions.
Samu’s objective for the campaign had been to remain and continue his development, with Porto open to keeping him unless Newcastle or another suitor made a huge offer.
