TBR Football has learned that Newcastle United have been offered Sporting striker Conrad Harder – with the youngster seemingly on his way out of the Portuguese side.
Harder was viewed as Viktor Gyokeres’ long-term replacement after his move to Arsenal, but the 20-year-old Denmark international now appears close to leaving Sporting ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.
Newcastle are searching for a centre-forward while Alexander Isak continues to push for an exit from St James’ Park. He is currently separated from the squad, claiming promises were broken while the Magpies remain firm on their valuation of the Swedish attacker.
Brentford forward Yoane Wissa remains a live option for Eddie Howe’s men, and it now appears they have also been presented with the possibility of signing Harder.
As reported by TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, AC Milan have turned to Harder after abandoning a move for Victor Boniface and failing to strike terms with Manchester United over Rasmus Hojlund.
Milan have tabled an offer of around £20 million plus a large sell-on clause, and negotiations are ongoing between the clubs.
Bailey stated: “TBR Football can confirm that intermediaries have contacted Newcastle to alert them to Harder’s availability.
“We are told that Newcastle have monitored Harder before. The club want to add two strikers to their squad before the market closes.”
Harder, 20, only joined Sporting last summer from Nordsjaelland in a deal worth roughly £16m, with a release clause of £69m included. He netted 12 goals and supplied seven assists across 51 matches last campaign but could now be set to leave.
With Milan bidding far lower than the release clause, Newcastle may monitor developments carefully before making any concrete move regarding Harder’s future.
Such expenditure could be balanced if Liverpool match Newcastle’s valuation of £150m for Isak. The two clubs face off on Monday night at St James’ Park in what promises to be a fiery encounter given this summer’s transfer wrangles.
