Matt Targett explains decision to leave Newcastle United as loan move to Middlesbrough is sealed
Matt Targett has outlined the reasons behind his exit from Newcastle United after completing a loan switch to Middlesbrough.
Geordie Boot Boys were first to report that the full-back was close to joining Boro, and now the agreement has officially gone through.
The 29-year-old is no longer part of Eddie Howe’s squad, making the step down to the Championship for only the second occasion in his career, linking up with Newcastle’s North East neighbours Middlesbrough.
It is a promising moment to arrive at the Riverside. Michael Edwards’ side sit second in the Championship table after an impressive start to the 2025/26 campaign.
Targett is eager to use his know-how to boost Boro’s push for promotion and has now detailed why this move made sense at this stage of his career.
When asked why it felt like the right choice, he replied:
“I haven’t had much game time recently,” he admitted.
“I’m at a stage where I want to be playing every week. As soon as I heard Middlesbrough were keen, this was the place I wanted to join.
“The added bonus is the fantastic start they’ve had in the Championship, and I’m excited to bring my experience and ability to the squad.”
Targett’s involvement has been limited for the past two years. A series of fitness setbacks saw him slip down the order, with his most recent Premier League start dating back to September 2023.
However, after completing a full pre-season, the left-back is in good condition and eager for his first Boro appearance, which could arrive this Saturday at home against Sheffield United.
With his departure, Newcastle United now have fewer options at left-back.
That role is currently filled by Tino Livramento, though it will eventually revert to Lewis Hall. He made his first senior outing since February on Monday night, coming off the bench during Newcastle’s defeat to Liverpool.
Between Livramento and Hall, Howe has cover in the position, but should either become unavailable, young defender Alex Murphy could get his chance.
