With just over a day left before the summer transfer deadline, there’s still no clarity on whether Yoane Wissa will end up as a Newcastle United signing.
Not long ago, this looked like a deal merely awaiting completion, with the Congolese forward entering his last contract year and us prepared to hand Brentford around £30m-plus.
Yet the Bees have flipped their stance: after losing Bryan Mbeumo, they are now unwilling to sanction Wissa’s exit, despite the fact he hasn’t played a single minute so far this campaign.
And with Wissa now publicly stating his desire to leave West London, it aligns with a renewed approach from us…
Ben Jacobs, Newcastle made another verbal proposal to Brentford earlier in the week to capture Yoane Wissa, though Keith Andrews’ side have yet to give a reply.
Believed to be worth £40m plus £5m in extras, the offer remains well short of Brentford’s latest £60–65m price tag for the unsettled attacker.
Jacobs noted that “Brentford delayed replying while they searched for a striker,” which appears to be the main obstacle right now. They are adamant about securing cover before letting him leave.
It makes sense, since Brentford – just like us with Isak – don’t want to weaken themselves after selling a key figure, particularly when a relegation battle could hinge on margins.
Without directly drawing parallels between Brentford’s stance over Wissa and our reluctance to part with Isak, the Bees may create problems if they cannot resolve things before Monday midnight.
Wissa insists he has written assurances of a gentleman’s pact allowing him to go, and if that’s denied, it feels difficult to imagine him finding a way back, similar to Isak’s unwillingness to reintegrate at Newcastle.
So the final 24 hours of business in the window seem dependent on Brentford’s choice: sanctioning Wissa’s sale to us might enable Isak’s exit, though it’s unlikely we raise our offer anywhere near their valuation.
