Newcastle launch loan-with-option bid for long-term defensive target

Newcastle United remain active in the transfer market and look ready to step up efforts for a defender they have tracked since the beginning of the summer.

With just hours left in the window, Alexander Isak is finalising a move to Liverpool from Newcastle, creating a gap down the middle for Eddie Howe to replace with a fresh striker.

Amid numerous names being linked, Brentford’s Yoane Wissa is the one heading to St James’ Park after the Bees accepted an offer for the Congo international forward.

He is due for a medical before confirmation, and will join recent arrival Nick Woltemade, with the pair set to compete directly for the lead striking role this season.

Following a weekend stalemate, Howe admitted his team lack attacking sharpness right now, which could explain the urgency behind their late pursuit of extra firepower.

Even so, attention is shifting, and doubts remain over which positions Howe might still strengthen as Newcastle juggle both Premier League duties and Champions League football.

Late on, supporters have been handed a fresh update as news emerges regarding one defensive option they have continued to pursue since earlier in the window.

Interestingly, the Magpies have monitored Oosterwolde since June, seeing him as a more affordable alternative to Marc Guehi, though Diego Carlos’ injury complicates matters.

Comfortable as a centre-back or at left-back, the Dutchman has been lauded as “extremely physically strong” by his agent, Jose Blakborn, and he has already played six games this term.

With three years left on his Fenerbahce contract, the 24-year-old still carries strong value even if he pushes for a transfer, meaning Newcastle must negotiate hard to succeed.

Deals have collapsed later than this, yet PIF must act quickly to persuade the Turkish side they should sanction the player’s departure before the window officially closes.
