Nick Woltemade became Newcastle’s record purchase in the summer window, joining for £69 million including add-ons to seal his move to Tyne side.
The Magpies secured Woltemade before Alexander Isak’s departure, with hopes the 23-year-old will eventually step into the void left behind by Liverpool’s new centre-forward.
Although Woltemade won’t wear the number nine shirt, the expectation is for him to deliver goals like one. Should he succeed, he will quickly earn cult hero status among the St James’ Park faithful.
There remains uncertainty about how the youngster will adapt, given he lacks Premier League experience, yet Rio Ferdinand has issued a curious prediction about Newcastle’s most expensive addition.
Ferdinand suggested the towering attacker may turn into a ‘style’ figure in English football during his stint with Newcastle.
“He’s a talented lad and maybe one of the biggest style icons we’ll see in the Premier League for the next three or four years. Great hair. I think the moustache suits him too.”
Woltemade is undeniably fashionable, and his appearance in a sharp suit while watching Newcastle’s draw with Leeds underlined his stylish reputation.
Still, Newcastle’s supporters will only be focused on whether the imposing striker can consistently find the net in black and white.
That burden will be eased slightly following the deadline day arrival of Yoane Wissa, signed from Brentford for £55m to boost Eddie Howe’s attacking options.
The deal has drawn comparisons to Isak’s saga, as Wissa also forced the issue by releasing a statement and making clear he wanted to leave the Bees.
In the aftermath, Ferdinand questioned Newcastle’s fanbase, asking how they felt about Wissa’s behaviour given the outrage at Isak’s exit.
“Wissa’s another one who stirred things up, puts a statement out, tells Brentford he doesn’t want to stay,” he remarked.
Though supporters are excited about Wissa’s quality, many will disapprove of the way he engineered his move, as it highlights once more the growing influence of player power.
