Crystal Palace are not thought to be at risk regarding PSR breaches – although the agreement for Uche does indicate a potential lack of available cash.
Williams explained to TBR Football: “Under Parish, Palace’s general strategy has been to operate sustainably, though the owners have injected more money lately than many fans might think.
“They have added about £100m in equity across the past three years, while also providing interest-free loans worth eight figures. So Palace’s investors are indeed putting money into the side. Still, the conservative model frustrates some supporters who want greater ambition.
“Few clubs carry less transfer debt than Palace – essentially the sums due on instalments. Their objective is keeping the accounts very clean. That was probably a big factor behind Woody Johnson’s involvement. Despite John Textor’s shortcomings, he always committed funds when required. Whether Johnson adopts that stance remains to be seen.
“The setup of the Uche transfer suggests there may be some immediate cash constraints, since it clearly is not a PSR limitation. Palace’s financial statements confirm this. The only alternative factor could be UEFA’s Squad Cost ratio, restricting clubs to 70% of turnover plus a rolling average of sales profits on squad wages and transfer expenses. But Uche’s wages are already covered, and deferring £3m in amortisation wouldn’t alter much. Since the Squad Cost rule is tested annually, only £1.5m would actually count.”
“The other explanation might lie with Getafe. At times a selling club may prefer a loan-to-buy, especially if they expect a profit that season and wish to avoid paying tax immediately. Pushing income into the following year can prove beneficial. While I cannot claim deep knowledge of Getafe’s accounts, their recent trading patterns suggest this could be the case.”
When asked last month about Marc Guehi’s future amid Liverpool speculation, Parish hinted Palace must act carefully.
The Forest Hill chairman admitted Palace lack “endless resources” and added: “We’d have to sell Guehi if the right bid appeared. Allowing top players to leave for free is damaging… it requires a new deal or an outcome.”
TBR Football learned Glasner almost quit unless Parish cancelled a £35m deal with Liverpool for Guehi, a decision that – while strengthening Palace’s chances this season – may enforce even stricter finances in the summer.
