‘I want to retire here’ – Newcastle United star outlines long-term goal

Nick Pope sees himself ending his career at Newcastle United despite Eddie Howe seeking another goalkeeper this summer.

It is well known that the Magpies admired James Trafford before his dramatic return to Manchester City. A St James’ Park switch was close until Etihad chiefs activated the buy-back clause at the last moment.

Newcastle eventually secured Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan, placing further uncertainty on Pope’s future. The 33-year-old has featured in the first three matches but now faces proven Premier League competition.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Pope — set to make his 100th club outing against Barcelona later this month — dismissed any talk of tension after Newcastle’s goalkeeper chase. He said: “There will always be names linked with Newcastle, whoever they are, that is football.

“You can only look after yourself and what benefits both you and the team at that moment. I never considered leaving, and there was never a thought of playing anywhere else but Newcastle United.

“I know Aaron from England duty, he is a top lad and a quality keeper. He is here to strengthen the group. He’s got good character and that’s what we’ve relied on these last few years, that defines our squad.”

Pope also suggested he could end his career on Tyneside while discussing the Champions League. He continued: “I could definitely see myself finishing my career with Newcastle, I don’t want to sound arrogant but I still believe I am a very good goalkeeper with many Premier League games.

“I trust in my ability and I’m excited about what’s next. We head into the Champions League again and that’s the stage I want to be competing on.”
