Where Utah and BYU landed in the rankings after the second week

Where do Utah and BYU stand in the top 25 after Week 2?

Both the Utes and Cougars improved to 2-0 this season following dominant wins Saturday

A day after crushing FCS opponent Cal Poly, Utah made a notable climb in the Associated Press rankings.

The Utes rose five positions to No. 20 in Sunday’s AP poll with 361 points, thanks to a 63-9 victory that kept them unbeaten at 2-0 early in the year.

BYU, meanwhile, after handling Stanford 27-3 in a late-night matchup, slipped a spot among teams outside the top 25 but still receiving votes. The Cougars sit just two places shy of the rankings, coming in at No. 27.

Directly ahead of the Cougars is Arizona State, which earned 94 points compared to BYU’s 92.

Arizona State dropped a tough 24-20 loss on the road against Mississippi State. The Big 12’s defending champion, ranked No. 12 in last week’s AP poll, fell behind 17-0 before storming back to lead 20-17 with less than two minutes left, only to surrender a 58-yard game-winning touchdown in the final half-minute.

Iowa State has become the top-ranked Big 12 squad, now at No. 14 after moving up two spots. The Cyclones edged rival Iowa 16-13, improving their record to 3-0.

Texas Tech, dominant in its second straight win of the year by thrashing Kent State 62-14, climbed three places to No. 21 in the AP poll.

The AP top 5 featured only one change. The first three stayed intact, with Ohio State at No. 1, Penn State at No. 2, and LSU at No. 3. Oregon leaped two places to No. 4 after crushing Oklahoma State 69-3, while Miami held steady at No. 5.

Georgia slipped from No. 4 to No. 6 after a tighter-than-expected result against Austin Peay.

Utah also surpassed BYU in the LBM Coaches poll, climbing from just outside the rankings to No. 21 after Week 2’s performances.

The Cougars, in contrast, remained steady at No. 25.

Other Big 12 schools in the coaches rankings include Iowa State at No. 14, Texas Tech at No. 20, and Arizona State at No. 24.

The top five of the coaches poll didn’t change: Ohio State No. 1, Penn State No. 2, Georgia No. 3, LSU No. 4, and Oregon No. 5.
